Hi Everyone!
This weekend I detected 2 locations, one of them being a shoreline and the other a City park that I have hunted before (found 2 tokens in past) and that has been hit for many years by everyone else, Ill start with the shoreline location, it was mucky it was muddy and it was hot, but the finds were there so we toughed it out, me and 2 other buddy’s found a total of 4 token and 1 button, both my tokens are to worn for ID  as is the one my friend found, the other token is a 1815 new Brunswick half penny, they stayed to detect another location nearby I left to go home,,,,
Fast forward a few hours I am sitting at home and get the itch to test out the new setting at a park I’ve hunted before and only ever found modern clad except for 2 tokens (1837 Lower Canada penny & Ships Commerce Colonies) I called marcj and we met up for 6 , knowing that this park is the most hunted park around I knew the finds would be slim, I set out telling myself I would dig the odd scratchy tones and pay close attention to the threshold breaks, you see after receiving Andy’s book I realized that I was only using my detector to half its potential, well it payed off big time tonight. (I use Gone hunting’s settings but modified them to pitch hold, turned up threshold adjusted gain for soil conditions, turned GB off I also run HALF DISCRIM, Yeah I Know I’m that guy)
I wish I would of had my go pro for this hunt
Fist signal I get is this :hd:
Man was I ever excited!! I have found lots of colonial tokens but this is my first promotional token, as far as I can tell its from the 30’s, funny thing I am way more excited about this than my next find.
The very next hole I dug was deep…. Really deep, my lesche digger was completely swallowed by the hole, one the last pop of dirt out comes flying a huge copper, Its 1857 Upper Canada 1 penny token, as I look at the coin laying there I realize that the circle of dirt next to the coin is not the impression of the coin but a second 1850 upper Canada Token! At this point I’m ecstatic & can’t believe my eyes, I think the reason I found these coins I in direct relation to Andy’s book and setting I changed, this is the deepest signal I have ever dug, it sounded good but scratchy, what I had noticed is that the threshold did not blank before or after the signal.
Moving on a few minutes later I get another deep signal next to a tree, cut my plug and pop it,,,, root,, big root,,, signal under the big root,,, dig around, out pop 1916 LC!! At this point I can’t believe my luck!
Yes I know that there is luck involved in detecting, you have to get you coil over the target BUT you need to be able to interpret that signal, on this hunt I really payed attention to what the detector told me like never before, I will be returning to this site and see if I can find anymore coins that other detectorist have blissfully just gone right over. I attribute the success of this hunt to the Information I got from Andy’s book and my new settings, yeah there is some luck BUT I know I have decent CTX skills also.
Thanks
Happy Hunting
