I got out for about an hour and half last night after work . Dug a few targets , then i found this old copper coin. It's a blacksmith token ( BL-2A1 ). Blacksmith tokens are crude imitations of British and Irish halfpence coins that were made during the period from about 1825 through 1840. They were made to appear like a badly worn coin. they were artificially darkened to create the illusion of age. And only a crude outline of the type was cut, without date or legend. These pieces were accepted in trade because of the almost insatiable demand for small change in Lower Canada at that time, particularly in Montreal.
